There are well over 6,000 collection agencies in the United States, yet less than 5% are licensed to collect debt in all states that require licensing.  The importance of engaging in business with only a licensed collection agency is one of the most important aspects of choosing the right agency.  If you have delinquent accounts that are spread across the United States, but your agency is only licensed to collect in the state they reside, then they could be engaging in unlicensed debt collection on your behalf.

When reviewing collection agencies, consider the following: Would you use an unlicensed doctor for surgery?  Would you trust your legal matters to an individual who has not passed the state bar?  If no, then why would you consider a collection agency that is not properly licensed to collect your money?
